The word that describes this photoshoot session is pivot. When talking through Ruhaani’s vision for her maternity photoshoot she had a very specific idea in mind: dreamy sunset hues, soft blue waves, and blurry in motion shots and she knew exactly where she’d be printing these images out to go up on her walls. The location was set for Manhattan Beach near the Ritz Carlton for an early Saturday evening in September.
All seemed well the day of the photoshoot as we neared the Ritz except we soon hit one very big roadblock: there was no parking. No matter how many circles we made of the guest parking lot (BOTH guest parking lots), there were no openings. So what did we do? Pivot.
After debriefing over maps and doing a quick search, we found the answer: Pomponio State Beach. A few miles out from where we had been circling, it was the perfect fit with easy parking and no big crowds. Now that the new location was set, there was only one problem: the lighting. It was already an exceptionally bright day and by that point, the sun’s light was too harsh to do the photos justice. So what did we do? That’s right. Pivot.
We took a brief rest stop at a nearby coffee shop where we chatted and laughed over sweet treats and drinks before it was time to head out to the beach. And this is why I believe in the importance of timing and that everything happens for a reason. By the time we made it out to the beach, we not only got a gorgeous set of images in that golden hour sun but as the sun descended below the horizon, the photographs only got more and more dreamier. Exactly as Ruhaani had dreamed of.
